1.3 Million GM Compact Cars Recalled

General Motors is recalling 1.3 million vehicles due to a power steering problem that has resulted in over 1,000 complaints. Here is a brief summary of the facts:

  • The power steering problem is linked to 14 accidents and one injury.
  • In the US the recall includes 2005 – 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 – 2010 Pontiac G5 models.
  • Drivers will be alerted before power steering failure by warning lights and a chime.
  • According to GM the vehicle can still be ‘safely controlled’ but steering under 15 mph becomes more difficult.

GM Vice President of Quality, Jamie Hresko states, "After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty. Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers’ peace of mind.”
