What To Do If You’re In A Car Accident

The first time I was in a car accident, as a teenager, I was so upset I almost cried. A few years later, in my second car accident (I swear I’m a good driver!), I got out of the car and stopped all witnesses, got their information, called the police and the car insurance company in a matter of minutes.

Car accidents are one of the most unpleasant, stressing and upsetting experiences. However, they don’t have to be that bad if you take the right steps.

To help you in that moment of distress, the BuyingAdvice Team has come up with a list of things you need to do after a car accident. Keep it in your glove compartment and if you do get in an accident, remain calm and go through this checklist.

1- Determine the extent of the damage – Injuries come before material losses. Check to make sure nobody involved in the accident needs medical attention.

2- Look for witnesses – If nearby drivers or passersby saw the accident, ask them to pull over and get their information. Having witnesses helps determine liability.

3- Call the police – You’ll need to file a car accident report even for minor accidents. Don’t leave the scene until you do, otherwise it may complicate things with your insurance company.

4- Don’t admit fault yet – Talk to the police clearly about what happened. Describe the accident and reactions, but refrain from admitting any fault yet. Emotions may blur your judgment and make you feel guilty. Liability will be determined in due time by someone else.

5- Get the facts – Get the other car’s license plate, description and, if possible, the VIN number. Exchange insurance company information.

6- Contact your insurance company – Try to do it as soon as possible, even in the scene of the accident with the police still there. This can save you time during the claim process.
