New 2012 Sports Cars … And Did We Mention They Are Electric?
Picture this: You’re driving down the highway in your awesome, Ferrari-like, new 2012 sports car, with the wind in your hair, feeling that unique sense of freedom and empowerment. You hit the accelerator and make 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, reaching the top speed of 130 mph. All heads turn and look at you with envy as you fly by. And then you think … why didn’t they make electric cars like this before?
Yes, electric cars. Lack of power is no longer a valid excuse for manufacturers not making electric cars.
The revolutionary electric car is manufactured by Tesla Motors, a Silicon Valley-based company founded in 2003. Their mission statement: making “high-performance, highly efficient electric sports cars – with no compromises.” The Tesla Roadster, the company’s first product, certainly meets these standards.
According to the manufacturer, this electric car is six times as efficient as the most popular sports car, but produces only one tenth of the pollution. Its lithium-ion batteries can be charged in 3.5 hours using an at-home unit or mobile charging kit. A full charge can take you on a 250-mile ride without a problem, reducing the per mile cost to 1 cent.
Just like anything coming from Silicon Valley, the car is loaded with the latest technology, including satellite navigation system, iPod dock, a Vehicle Display System and a Homelink device.
The Tesla Roadster is also based on the Lotus Elise, a car that is known for possessing the uncanny ability to tackle sharp corners with ease.
The downside? The Tesla Roadster is certainly not a car for the masses. The price tag on this baby is close to $100,000, which is not too bad if you compare it to the new car price quote of other upscale sports cars like the Ferrari 612 – priced around $250,000 – or the Porsche 911 – with a price range reaching $131,000. If this is within your budget, then the Tesla electric car will be more than willing to engage you in a clean and exhilarating driving experience
Tesla is also offering the Model S, the all-electric car for the whole family. The Model S looks like an expensive Italian sports car, while having the capabilities of a large American sedan. The Model S has a maximum available range of 300 miles and can accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in 5.6 seconds—with zero tailpipe emissions. The good thing about the Model S is that it only costs about half than the price of the Roadster.
The Model S is not a sports car, but it can definitely perform like one. The newest electric vehicle in the Tesla lineup is the Tesla Model X. It is a radical electric-powered crossover vehicle with “falcon doors”, similar to the gull wing door design of the Mercedes SLS. The Model X also has sports car performance, as it can vigorously accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in around 5 seconds. The Tesla Model X is expected to go on sale in the last quarter of 2013.
