2007 Saturn ION Review

2007 Saturn ION Review The Saturn Ion debuted in 2003 as a replacement for the S-Series. But critics blasted it for its noisy engine, poor interior materials, and clunky steering. Saturn responded with a 2005 update that addressed these issues, while also improving the transmission. The ION is to be discontinued after this model year.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Saturn ION presents a sleek, yet inexpensive vehicle for those wanting something a bit more sporty. However, its poor side impacts safety scores and lackluster interior materials seriously detract from its value. Overall, the ION is a solid ride, and if you’re really attracted to the Saturn way of doing things, then it might be right for you.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

The Saturn ION received two-and-a-half out of five stars in initial reliability from J.D. Power and Associates. Automotive Information Systems gave the 2004 ION an overall “Green” rating. There have been a number of reported issues with the ION, mostly limited to the 2003 model year, including: Air conditioner leaks, noisy blower motors, coolant leaks, engine stalling, loose exhaust bolts, and abnormal turn signals. The ION has been recalled twice. The 2003-04 model was recalled due to inoperative turn signals. The 2004 model was recalled due to cracking fuel feed pipes. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The ION earned a solid five out of five stars in government frontal crash tests. Unfortunately, it only earned about three-and-a-half out stars in side impacts. The IIHS gave “Acceptable” scores for frontal and rear impacts, and it’s worst “Poor” rating for side impacts. The ION is sparse on safety features, offering antilock brakes and traction control on the ION 2 and 3, while both come standard on the Red Line. Side airbags are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Inexpensive
+ Good performance in its class
+ Large trunk

Cons
– Poor side crash test scores
– Inferior interior materials
– Lacking in safety features

Head-To-Head Competition:

The ION is a good value compared to the Ford Focus, costing over $1,000 less, and adding air-conditioning and power accessories. The ION also has these advantages to the Mazda MAZDA3, while also offering more interior space. However, for about the same price, you can get a Nissan Versa, which comes with standard side airbags, a six-speed transmission, and gets slightly better gas mileage. However, the ION has over 20 more horses, along with power accessories.

What Others Are Saying:

“Needless to say, the Ion is a solid well-balanced car with a lot of positive attributes.”The Family Car

“Unfortunately I noticed lapses in refinement and areas where cost-savings had been enforced: a poor fit in some interior panels, uneven upholstery edges showing where they shouldn’t have been, visible screws in the front door interior hand grips and in our test car, water vapour inside a headlight lens. So while I wanted to become a Saturn fan, these gaps plus the uncomfortable seats left me disappointed.”About.com

“The earnestness with which the Saturn folks present and promote the Ion makes us wonder whether they ever drive their competitors’ cars. There are some clever ideas here, but overall, the Ion is a disappointment.”Automobile Magazine
