2008 Kia Spectra Review

2008 Kia Spectra Review The Spectra is a compact car that debuted in 2002 as a hatchback version of the Kia Sephia. In 2002, it replaced the Sephia entirely. It was redesigned for 2005, adding the SX trim and spinning the hatchback into its own model, the Spectra5. For 2007, it received minor exterior and interior tweaks.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

With its long list of standard features and great warranty, the Kia Spectra is a great value for the price. While it may not have the refinement of a Toyota or a Honda, it packs a lot of value into an economical package. If you’re not scared off by its sub-par IIHS crash test scores, the Spectra is definitely worth a look.

What’s New For 2008:

The Spectra is unchanged for 2008. Three trims are available: The basic LX, the full-featured EX, and the sporty SX.

It’s been recalled twice for inappropriate airbag deployment and defective tie rods. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Spectra earned 5 stars in government frontal crash tests and 4 stars in side tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Acceptable” for the front and rear and, “Marginal” for the side. Full side airbags and tire-pressure monitoring come standard. Anti-lock brakes are optional on the SX.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Good value
+ Standard side airbags
+ Great warranty

Cons
– ABS only an option on Sporty trims
– Mediocre crash test scores
– Slack handling

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Mitsubishi Lancer costs a thousand more, but has a bit more hp. However, it lacks air conditioning and has less passenger room. The Nissan Versa costs a few hundred less, but has a little less hp. The Ford Focus costs about a hundred more, but has less passenger space.

What Others Are Saying:

“The quality and finish look to be equal to the best in class. It has turned out to be this reviewer’s pleasant-surprise-of-the-month if not the year.”About.com

“It’s easy to see why most reviews of Korean cars are clouded with fluff. It’s tempting to cheer on the underdog. But the truth is that Toyondissan has nothing to fear from Kia’s sales leader. The Spectra is still the sort of uninspired car you buy because you can afford to, not because you want to.”The Truth About Cars

“The Kia Spectra is a small but compelling package. More important for everyday driving, the Spectra is a nice little car. It represents one of the best values among compacts, with an impressive list of safety equipment for its modest price.”The New York Times
