The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

Last summer, the Toyota Prius was one of the hottest items on the market. Touted by celebrities and offering America a solution to sky-high gas prices, drivers were literally waiting in line to get their hands on it. The hype has long since cooled, but the Prius itself is hot as ever. Toyota reliability and unbeatable gas mileage are combined in a car that is way ahead of its time. If you’re an environmentalist, a science fiction fan or are just sick of high gas prices, the Prius is a great choice, and is now more affordable than ever.

Problems with the first generation included failing radio knobs, computer problems, electrical problems and engine stalling. It was recalled once. Problems with the current generation include coolant leaks, malfunctioning sensors, inaccurate fuel gauges, and flaky dashboard indicators. It was recalled in 2004 for cracking power steering components, and the 2004-06 models were recalled for weak airbags. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Futuristic
+ Unbeatable gas mileage
+ Doesn’t sacrifice interior space or comfort

Cons

– No more tax credits
– Potential smug emissions

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Nissan Altima starts at $5,000 more and gets ten fewer miles to the gallon, but does include standard stability control. The Saturn Aura Hybrid costs a couple thousand more, lacks traction control, but includes stability control. While a hybrid version is no longer available, you might want to consider the Honda Accord. It starts slightly cheaper than the Prius, and gets good mileage for a regular gas engine, but even at its best, it gets 14 fewer miles to the gallon.
