2008 Suzuki Reno Review

2008 Suzuki Reno Review The Reno is a compact hatchback that debuted in 2004. It offers buyers a low price and a long list of standard features. But how does it stack up in wave of new compacts?

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Suzuki Reno struggles to stay afloat amidst its competitors. The vehicle leaves a lot to be desired and its poor fuel efficiency and unstable suspension are definite turn-offs. Although drivers might be tempted by its low price, it would be advantageous to comparison-shop on this one.

What’s New For 2008:

Except for the fact that the audio system was downgraded from eight speakers to four, the Reno is virtually unchanged for 2008. Although there is only one trim, a Convenience Package is available.

It was recalled once due to non-latching seatbelts. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles and drivers can expect average reliability.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Reno earned 4 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it received an “Acceptable” for the front and “Poor” for the rear. Front side airbags are standard, while anti-lock brakes are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Inexpensive
+ Plenty of standard features
+ Sporty look

Cons
– Weak acceleration with automatic option
– Poor gas mileage
– Unstable ride quality

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chevrolet Cobalt has more cargo space, 20 more hp, and gets about five more miles to the gallon, but lacks power accessories. The Honda Fit has more cargo space, ABS, and gets up to eight more miles to the gallon. The Kia Rio gets up to seven more miles to the gallon, but also lacks power accessories.

What Others Are Saying:

“But the biggest competitor, the car that could turn out to be the Reno’s downfall, is right there in the same showroom: The Suzuki Aerio SX. The Aerio offers more space, more power, and more personality. Here at About Cars, we’ve put the Aerio on a bunch of our top ten lists, because it is the epitomy of cheap-n-cheerful. Sadly, the Aerio is often overlooked. Perhaps it’ll stand out better now — the Reno is certainly dull enough to provide a strong contrast.”About.com

“So while I wasn’t exactly thrilled to schedule the Suzuki Reno, by the end of the week I was sad to see it leave the Heilig driveway. It was a fun car to drive and proved to be much more than the sum of its parts.”The Auto Channel

“But as an econobox, it’s not as bad as I’d thought it might be. It won’t ignite any sort of passion, but it beats walking home.”AutoWeek
