What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Outlook 2 stars for mechanical and design quality and 4 stars for performance. First year issues include failing power locks, transmission binding, twisted seatbelts, sluggish shifting, flaky power liftgates, engine misfires and doors that automatically unlock in park. It was recalled once for faulty airbag sensors. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Outlook earned perfect government crash test scores. IIHS scores are not available. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, rollover sensors, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Car-like handling
+ Third row with room for adults
+ High payload capacity

Cons
– Weaker engine
– Some cumbersome interior controls
– Some reliability concerns

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Toyota Highlander costs almost $1,000 less and can tow more, but has less cargo space overall. The GMC Envoy has over 150 more hp, but lacks a third row, and costs several thousand more. The Honda Pilot costs a few hundred less, includes a CD changer, and has over 100 more hp, but lacks a third row and can’t carry as much.

What Others Are Saying:

“The Outlook is an excellent choice for SUV refugees seeking a vehicle with better mileage and more efficient packaging that still isn’t afraid to get its feet wet (with optional all wheel-drive). Or people who just can’t bring themselves to buy a minivan.”The Truth About Cars

“Interior quality in both vehicles is along the lines of the new Chevrolet Silverado–which is to say, much better than past GM offerings but still not as refined as we’d like–and wind noise is noticeable for its near absence. All in all, GM’s new crossovers represent exactly what most buyers of people movers both need and want: a vehicle with all the practicality of an SUV and few of the drawbacks.”Automobile Magazine

“We like this one. We like it very much. But it’s too bad GM decided to call it the Outlook. The company should have adopted the phonetic spelling of the Saturn general manager’s surname and called it the Lajek.” – The Detroit News
