2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED3 Review

The MAZDASPEED3 is a high-performance variant of the MAZDA3, which replaced the Protege in 2003. It shares an engine and styling cues with the similar MAZDASPEED6. Compared to the standard MAZDA3, it has a sturdier body and a beefier suspension. The MAZDA3 has taken the automotive media by storm, earning over fifty awards since its debut, including MotorWeek’s 2004 “Driver’s Choice Awards.”

What’s New For 2007:

This year’s MAZDASPEED features a 2.3-L, 263-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The suspension has been lowered and sport tuned. Numerous styling differences set it apart from the base 3, such as a roof spoiler, large tailpipe, and side skirts.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

The MAZDA3 earned only two-and-a-half out of five stars for initial reliability from J.D. Power. However, it has had very few problems so far. Most recorded issues are limited to the 2004-05 models, and include overheating air conditioners, grinding brakes, engine noise, failing power windows, and inefficient wipers. The 2004-05 MAZDA3s were recalled for faulty airbag sensors. Expect above average reliability. Mazda’s standard warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The MAZDA3 earned four out of five stars in government frontal crash tests, and three out of five in side tests. The IIHS gave it its best “Good” score for frontal impacts, but its worst “Poor” rating for side impacts. Rear impacts earned a “Marginal” rating. Anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitoring, full side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard.

The 2008 Saab 9-3 has standard leather seats and almost three times the cargo space, but costs over $6,000 more and has 50 less hp. The 2008 Subaru Impreza has more cargo room and AWD, but costs over $2,000 more, has 40 less hp, and gets up to six fewer miles to the gallon. The Volkswagen GTI costs only about $1,500 more gets slightly better gas mileage, but has about 60 less hp.
