What is the Predicted Reliability:

The MAZDA6 earned only two-and-a-half out of five stars in J.D. Power’s initial quality survey. However, the MAZDA6 has maintained a pretty good record. Recorded issues are mostly related to the debut model, and include: Brake, steering and engine noise, engine misfire, oil leaks, and falling fog lights. The MAZDA6 has been recalled twice; once in 2003 for a potential fuel leak, and another in 2004 for seatbelts that didn’t lock properly. Expect average to above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

The IIHS gave its’ best “Good” rating in frontal tests, but its worst “Poor” rating for side impacts. The MAZDASPEED6 comes standard with AWD, anti-lock brakes, full head side airbags, active head restraints and stability control.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Powerful engine
+ Standard AWD
+ Excellent handling

Cons
– Stick shift only
– Average fuel economy
– Clutch takes some getting used to

Head-To-Head Competition:

The MAZDASPEED6’s most direct competitor is the Subaru Legacy GT. Both feature all-wheel drive standard, but the Mazda has about 30 more hp, while costing a few hundred less than the Subaru. The Acura TSX costs about the same, but has 70 less hp and lacks AWD. However, it does get up to six more miles to the gallon. The Honda Civic SI has nearly 80 less hp and lacks AWD, but it also costs over $8,500 less.

What Others Are Saying:

“This car is intended for mature audiences only and offers what Mazda claims is ‘sophisticated, understated performance.’ The masculine styling, created by the company’s German design studio, definitely will look understated to fans of big wings and air scoops.”Automobile Magazine

“As good as it is, it’s too clumsy and slow to compete with equally priced STI’s and EVO’s. It’s outclassed inside and out by the svelte Legacy. And the answer is… who cares? Mazda has created a charming, keenly priced, everyday family sedan that transforms into a snarling, tire-shredding maniac at the kick of a pedal and the touch of a button.”The Truth About Cars

“…while quick off the mark this hypo-6 isn’t overly harsh to its occupants. I spent an entire week zipping around town, out and about some enjoyable rural roads and, lest I forget, jaunting up and down my local ski mountain for a little high-speed action. Never once were my feathers ruffled, so to speak, and the tuned-6 is every bit as well put together as the naturally aspirated 6 in top-line trim.”Automobile.com
