2007 Mazda MAZDA5 Review

2007 Mazda MAZDA5 Review The MAZDA5 is a minivan that debuted for 2006. Smaller than most minivans, the MAZDA5 is designed for maximum efficiency. Despite its diminutive size, the MAZDA5 has up to three rows of seating. Like all Mazda products, it promises a fun driving experience.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Mazda MAZDA5 is, like most Mazda products, one of a kind. It doesn’t lead in safety features, value, or performance. However, it’s the most nimble minivan you can buy, and easily one of the most affordable. If you need a minivan, but don’t want to feel like you’re trying to park an M1 Abrams, the MAZDA5 is the ideal choice.

What’s New For 2007:

The Grand Touring trim is new for this year. It features heated leather seats and Xenon headlights. Galaxy Gray and Dark Plum are now available colors.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gave the MAZDA5 3 stars for overall design quality and 2.5 stars for overall performance and design. Problems include malfunctioning interior lights, difficult steering, engine misfires, and body vibration. It was recalled twice in 2006 for exhaust heat buildup and freezing latches. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are unavailable. Anti-lock brakes, brake force distribution, and full side airbags come standard. If you choose a Touring model with navigation, a tire-pressure monitor is included.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Nimble
+ Very affordable
+ Plenty of storage compartments

Cons
– Smallish interior
– Reduced footprint doesn’t equal more fuel efficiency
– Weak engine

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Dodge Caravan starts off $400 more than the MAZDA5 and nearly matches it in horsepower and fuel economy. It does have a somewhat roomier interior, however. The Kia Sedona costs $3,000 more, but features a six-cylinder with 100 more hp, for nearly equal fuel economy. It’s on par with the Caravan in terms of passenger room, but adds standard stability control. The Honda Odyssey has about 90 more hp with its six-cylinder, seats seven, and features standard stability control.

What Others Are Saying:

“Plenty of storage and a versatile seating plan characterize the inside of the Mazda 5. Lots of cup holders and cubbies as well as storage and stowage areas add to its practicality for families or just for all the stuff we all like to have with us when we’re out and about. The 50/50 third row seats fold down with a pull of a strap and then pull easily back into place.”The Auto Channel

“In the past, minivans were often nodding prairie schooners, but the wee Mazda 5 is much more tied down and tossable, though perhaps not as much so as its small size would suggest. The power steering is electrically assisted-not our favorite setup, but it works well here, without the “Is it live, or is it Nintendo?” disconnection that sometimes plagues these systems. And, of course, the smaller dimensions make the Mazda 5 very easy to park, with no need for beeping aids.”Automobile Magazine

“With its singular mix of style, flexibility, and versatility, Mazda’s self-proclaimed multi-activity vehicle has the tangible attributes to please a broad range of potential owners. Despite a youthful character, the Mazda5 displays design maturity and value orientation that makes it a logical consideration for everyone from current Mazda3 owners to potential Scion xB or Chrysler PT Cruiser buyers seeking to make a step up in space.” – Motor Trend
