2007 Mazda MAZDA3 Review

2007 Mazda MAZDA3 Review The MAZDA3 is a sporty compact that replaced the Protege in 2003. A high-powered version was released in 2003, called the MAZDASPEED3. The MAZDA3 has taken the automotive media by storm, earning over fifty awards since its debut, including MotorWeek’s 2004 “Driver’s Choice Awards.”

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Mazda MAZDA3 delivers top-notch handling and quality for a relatively small price. Mazda, as unconventional as ever, has managed to not only make a sporty economy car, but offers it in hatchback or sedan versions. However, it lacks in the practicality department, proving to cramp taller drivers, while failing to deliver in safety features.

What’s New For 2007:

This year marks the MAZDA3’s first update since its release. The body has been reinforced, and the front fascia has been redesigned. A rear armrest has been added to the interior, and the audio system now features an auxiliary input. Stability control is now optional on the Touring trims.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

The MAZDA3 earned only two-and-a-half out of five stars for initial reliability from J.D. Power. However, it has so far had very few problems. Most recorded issues are limited to the 2004-05 models, and include overheating air conditioners, grinding brakes, engine noise, failing power windows, and inefficient wipers. The 2004-05 MAZDA3s were recalled for faulty airbag sensors. Expect above average reliability. Mazda’s standard warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The MAZDA3 earned four out of five stars in government frontal crash tests, and three out of five in side tests. The IIHS gave it its best “Good” score for frontal impacts, but its worst “Poor” rating for side impacts. Rear impacts earned a “Marginal” rating. The basic trims feature only the bare minimum amount of safety features, though all but the i trims have standard anti-lock brakes. Stability control and side airbags are only optional on the Touring trims. Tire pressure monitoring comes standard with the Grand Touring.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Sharp handling
+ Sweet styling
+ Good reliability history

Cons
– Poor crash test scores
– Few standard safety features
– Poorly equipped base model

Head-To-Head Competition:

The MAZDA3 can be had for a small price, but you can certainly get more for your money. For about $1,000 less, you can get the Scion xA, which features standard ABS, AC, and power accessories. Or, for about the same price, you could buy a Nissan Versa or a Honda Fit. The Versa costs about $700 more, but features a six-speed, CD changer, side airbags, AC, and power accessories. The Fit really shines, with standard ABS, side airbags, power accessories, AC, and almost twice the cargo capacity.

What Others Are Saying:

“If your budget restricts you to a compact car, or you simply like the idea of an inexpensive small car that can scoot around and pop into parking spaces without having to sacrifice room for people and stuff, then you can’t do much better that the Mazda3.”The Family Car

“It’s not what Mazda had in mind, but the 3 would make a nice car for a small family. The tough, polyester upholstery is easy to clean and there’s plenty of space in the back for two kids, while they’re still within easy reach of adults up front.”U.S.News & World Report

“The Mazda Mazda3 has no major complaints but also few frills – kudos for looks and handling.”C|Net
