2008 Jaguar X-Type Review

2008 Jaguar X-Type Review The X-Type is Jaguar’s entry-level offering that debuted in 2000. It’s offered as a compact sedan or a wagon, and when it debuted, it was their first compact model for Jaguar in 30 years. The Sportwagon debuted in 2005.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Jaguar X-Type has distinct styling, but is otherwise lacking in personality. The interior is disappointing and somewhat more Ford-inspired than Jaguar. The X-type lacks many features found in its (often cheaper) competitors. Overall, many other models offer more value and reliability.

What’s New For 2008:

Several optional features have been made standard on the sedan, including power memory seats, a dimming rearview mirror, a rear center headrest and rain-sensing wipers. The Sportwagon now includes the headrest standard and has the other features standard already.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

The X-Type received 3 stars for dependability in J.D. Power’s survey. Problems include problematic convertible tops, brake noise, coolant leaks, water leaks, failing heated seats, steering noise, difficult trunk latches and failed heated windshields. It’s been recalled four times for faulty hand brakes, faulty turn signals and fuel leaks. Expect below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The X-Type received 4 stars in government side tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Good” for the front, “Marginal” for the side, and “Poor” for the rear. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and stability control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Classic styling
+ Standard AWD
+ Smooth, composed ride

Cons
– Disappointing reliability
– No traction control
– Less than perfect safety scores

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Lexus ES 350 costs a few hundred less, includes traction control, a CD changer, moonroof, and has 45 more hp, but lacks AWD and leather. The Buick Lucerne CXL costs over a thousand less, includes traction control, and has a V8 engine with nearly 50 more hp. The Chrysler 300 Limited costs a few hundred less, includes traction control, and has 20 more hp, but lacks side airbags and gets up to 6 fewer miles to the gallon.

What Others Are Saying:

“In trying to build an economical Jaguar, I guess you have to find some ways of minimizing costs. I’m not saying that the X-Type uses any body parts or the Taurus platform, and certainly everything I’ve heard from both Jaguar and Ford decries that assumption. But there are some striking similarities between the two cars that don’t benefit either Ford or Jaguar.”The Auto Channel

“The electronics are intuitive and easy to use but nothing special. The gray leather upholstery on the test car was slick and comfortable, but . . . gray? And most of the features are the same as those found on competitors-there’s no tea brewer or oddball transmission. It’s nice to have all the modern conveniences the marketplace demands, but the X-Type could still be a little more British.”U.S.News & World Report

“The Jaguar X-Type offers luxurious accommodations in a relatively compact package. It comes with all-wheel drive. It offers the distinction of a Jaguar, as opposed to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. However, it’s a dated product compared with the other cars in its class.”The New York Times
