2008 Jaguar S-Type Review

2008 Jaguar S-Type Review The S-Type is a high-performance luxury car that debuted in 2000. Inspired by the original S-Type of the 1960s, the new S-Type offers all the luxury you expect from Jaguar. The S-Type R is a supercharged 390-hp performance variant that debuted in 2003. This will be the last year for the S-Type. It will be replaced by the XF in 2009.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Jaguar S-Type brings ’60s style into the 21st century. Unfortunately, the styling isn’t the only thing that’s retro with the S-Type. The platform itself hasn’t aged terribly well. Performance in the base model is disappointing. You can easily find a better alternative in this price range, though you’ll be hard pressed to match the S-Type’s style.

What’s New For 2008:

The V6 and V8 now have borrowed styling elements from the R. The R now features 19-inch wheels. The last 750 produced will be “Satin Editions” with a distinct interior.

It’s been recalled six times for weak seat belt buckles and parking brake problems, as well as a number of minor issues. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The S-Type earned 4.5 stars in government side crash tests. No other information is available. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros

+ Good fit and finish

Cons
– Mixed interior design
– Mediocre value
– Disappointing V6 performance

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Acura RL costs $1,500 more, but offers navigation, AWD, a CD changer, and over 50 more hp. The Audi A6 costs a couple thousand less and adds navigation, AWD, a CD changer, and a bit more trunk space. However, it lacks a moonroof or traction control. The Lexus GS 350 costs a couple thousand less, includes a CD changer, AWD, and has about 70 more hp. However, it lacks a moonroof.

What Others Are Saying:

“A disappointing driver overall, it felt sluggish in pickup; though it pulled away smoothly, it lacked any real excitement. The steering sent the car where it was pointed, and the brakes worked terrific. Like any autobox Jag, rowing through the Jag-specific J-shifter worked here as well as or better than all the paddles and autosticks in existence, but that’s not too much to get cranked about. We also felt a lot of vibration in the steering wheel, even over fairly smooth pavement. Said another way, Jag can’t get the replacement XF here soon enough.”Autoweek

“The Jaguar S-Type’s mix of classic styling and modern specification revitalized the company when it debuted a few years ago. It’s aging very well, and continues to provide style, substance, and value in the mid-luxury class.”The Auto Channel

“One refreshing thing about the S-Type R is the exceptional assembly quality — much better than we’ve seen on expensive Jags in the past. On the downside, the digital display in the center console is way too fussy and looks too cheap for a vehicle in this price segment.” – The Detroit News
