2007 Honda Pilot Review

2007 Honda Pilot Review The Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV that debuted in 2003. It quickly became a hit thanks to its high safety ratings and legendary Honda reliability. Engine power was boosted in 2005, and the exterior was overhauled for 2006. It has won numerous awards, including IntelliChoice’s “Best Overall Value,” Car and Driver’s “Best Large SUV” every year since its release, and Kiplinger’s “Best in Class” award from Kiplinger’s in 2006.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power reliability data is not available. Problems that affected the Pilot in its first year include defective occupant sensors, failing solenoids, faltering blowers, timing belt issues, and skipping wheels. The Pilot has been recalled four times for gear chipping, improperly manufactured fuel tanks, and incorrectly assembled steering columns. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Pilot has received perfect crash test scores from both the government and the IIHS. It is one of the IIHS’ top safety picks for 2007. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, tire pressure monitor, side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Standard third row
+ Fantastic crash test scores
+ Roomy interior

Cons
– Awkward handling
– Limited off-road potential
– Some unusual design elements

Head-To-Head Competition:

You might consider the Chevrolet Trailblazer LS1, which for the same price offers a larger engine with 50 more hp and AWD. But it lacks the Pilot’s traction control, side airbags, and standard third row seating. Also for the same price is the Chrysler Pacifica, which trades the Pilot’s third row for AWD. The Hyundai Veracruz is another worthy competitor, costing $790 less, though it also lacks the third row seat.

What Others Are Saying:

“The respected IntelliChoice car buying guide rates the Pilot the best overall value for mid-size SUVs. Automotive Lease Guide rates it as the SUV having the highest retained or residual value. Though operating any automobile – especially an SUV – is not an inexpensive proposition these days, the Pilot seems to represent excellent overall value.”About.com

“In the Pilot, Honda has a sophisticated, roomy, and reasonably quick way to get eight people to their destination no matter what Mother Nature throws down on the roads. As an added bonus, the fuel economy’s even decent.”Automobile Magazine

“The midsize Honda Pilot is a well-equipped, well-mannered and practical sport utility vehicle…”Forbes
