2008 Ford F-350 SD Review

2008 Ford F-350 SD Review The Ford F-Series is one of America’s favorite pickup trucks, and has been in production for over 50 years. The F-250 and F-350 are the linebackers of the F-Series, providing superior towing and hauling power. Both are built on a different platform than their light-duty sibling, the Ford F-150. Most recently, the 2004 redesign of the F-Series won numerous awards, including “North American Truck of the Year.”

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Ford F-350 SD is the most capable truck on the market, able to tow more than anyone else. With a reasonable starting price, it’s not only powerful, but affordable. However, don’t expect many standard amenities at that price – you won’t even get air conditioning. But what you will get is a powerful, capable truck with a surprisingly refined ride.

What’s New For 2008:

The 2008 F-350 is much improved, with a stronger chassis, smoother suspension, and extra rustproofing. New standard features include an auxiliary audio input jack, and a tailgate step. A new 6.4-L diesel engine is available, with 350 horsepower.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the F-350 2.5 stars for overall mechanical reliability, 4.5 stars for overall design quality, and 2.5 stars for performance and design. Problems with the last generation include buzzing radios, leaking transmissions, improperly sealed ducts, engine misfires, lurching clutches, engine noise, and heater core leaks. It was recalled 21 times. The current generation has had issues with brake noise, noisy clutches, engine noise, suspension noise, water leaks, and vehicle shake. It’s been recalled five times for issues such as fuel leaks, and premature tire wear. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are not available. However, the F-150 earned 5 stars in government frontal crash tests. In IIHS tests, the F-150 earned a “Good” score for frontal impacts and “Marginal” to “Poor” for rear collisions. Anti-lock brakes come standard. The XLT and Lariat have optional adjustable pedals and parking sensors.

Head-To-Head Competition:

The 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD has a larger engine with 50 more hp, standard 4WD, navigation, and a CD player, but costs almost $4,000 more. The 2008 GMC Sierra 3500HD has the same advantages, but costs about $4,700 more. The Dodge Ram 3500 includes air conditioning, 4WD, a CD player, and 30 more hp, but costs over $11,000 more.

What Others Are Saying:

“Ford calls the F-350 a “Beast of Burden.” While it can certainly handle most any burden asked of it, I’d have to say it’s a pretty sophisticated beast.”The Auto Channel

“In truth, the Super Duty did its job well, making ours easier. Powered by the 325-hp 6.0-liter Power Stroke Turbo-Diesel V8, the King Ranch was easily capable of matching normal traffic speeds on freeway on ramps and up hills. We kept checking the mirrors to see if the trailer was still with us.”Popular Mechanics

“The Ford Super Duty is a big, no-nonsense truck for people who work hard and play hard. It can be dressed for rough work, for a trip to to the opera, or anything in-between. The Super Duty is an important vehicle to Ford’s Way-Forward plan and represents a substantial percentage of their profitable truck market.”The Family Car
