2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Review
The Malibu is a midsize car that debuted in 1997. Patterned after the classic Malibu, which was last produced in 1983, the new model was a critical success for Chevy, and was named Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year.” It was redesigned in 2004, moving it to the Epsilon platform. The Malibu is all-new for 2008, and is accompanied by a new hybrid model.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Malibu is much improved for this year, and the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is a welcome addition, at least in theory. In practice, it offers little economical or ecological benefit. On average, you’ll find that you only get about two more miles to the gallon than a four-cylinder Malibu. Our suggestion? Either buy a true hybrid, like a Prius, or buy a regular Malibu instead.
What’s New For 2008:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power gives the Malibu 3 stars for dependability. Problems with the first generation include failing power door locks, overheating engines, engine noise, and suspension noise. It was recalled five times. The last generation had issues with engine knocks and noise, inaccurate fuel gauges, oil leaks, failing power steering, and high oil consumption. It was recalled twice for erratic anti-lock brakes and failing seat belts. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles and drivers can expect average reliability.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The Malibu Hybrid received 5 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS frontal tests, it earned a “Good” rating. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Inexpensive for a hybrid
+ Stylish
+ Quiet
Cons
– Big turning radius
– Reliability concerns
– Not very fuel efficient
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Saturn Aura Green Line Hybrid is very close in price and has similar gas mileage. The Nissan Altima Hybrid costs several thousand more, but gets up to 11 more miles to the gallon in the city. The Toyota Camry Hybrid costs a few thousand more, however it gets about 9 more miles in the city.
What Others Are Saying:
“In the end, the Malibu is not a perfect creation. But the 2008 model is surprisingly good and attractively priced…A standard industry tactic is to take the name of a beloved and successful vehicle and resurrect it, in hopes that yesteryear’s glow will rub off. Here’s a switcheroo: the 2008 Malibu may be a rare case in which a new vehicle is so impressive that it rehabilitates a tarnished name.” – New York Times
“The hybrid delivered a scare. Its powertrain kept racing and trying to fling the car forward after hard acceleration followed by firm braking. It finally required a full-on panic stop – anti-lock brakes kicking in, car nose-diving – to overcome the wildly revving engine and obey a red light. Only happened once, but …” – USA Today
“General Motors describes the type of hybrid system available in the 2008 Malibu as a ‘mild’ hybrid. This differs notably than what’s found, in say, the Toyota Prius, the best-selling gas-electric hybrid. General Motor’s ‘mild’ concept, also found in the Saturn Vue SUV, utilizes a regenerative braking process and a small electric motor active at very low speeds working in tandem with the four-cylinder engine. It’s a simpler system than Toyota’s and less expensive.” – Chicago Sun-Times
