2007 Chevrolet Equinox Review

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Chevrolet Equinox is a comfortable, practical family vehicle. It’s certainly not the most exciting CUV we’re seen, but what it does, it does well. This year’s safety additions make it worthy of our recommendation.

What’s New For 2007:

The Equinox is significantly improved for 2007. Stability control and four-wheel disc brakes are now standard, as is a tire-pressure monitor. The front and rear fascias have been redesigned, and a rear spoiler has been added.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Equinox 2.5 stars for overall mechanical and design quality. Problems with the Equinox include defective chips, failing EGR valves, inaccurate fuel gauges, and vehicle noise. It was recalled once in 2005 for non-locking park and again in 2006 for shifting out of park with the ignition off. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Equinox earned perfect government crash test scores. It earned a “Good” in IIHS frontal tests and “Marginal” in rear tests. Anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitoring, and stability and traction control come standard. Side airbags are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Solid reliability
+ Great crash test scores
+ Good handling

Cons
– Side airbags not standard
– Somewhat weak engines
– Poor value

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Hyundai Santa FE costs $1,000 less and include side airbags. The Mazda Tribute comes in at $700 less and adds side airbags, but doesn’t have as much payload capacity. The Mitsubishi Outlander costs almost $900 less, with 35 more hp and side airbags.

What Others Are Saying:

“The Equinox is at least as much minivan as SUV. But it’s hard to criticize something that is so functional and that works so well. However, it’s neither a performance vehicle, nor is it a status symbol. What it is is an automobile designed for the busy family person who needs something that will start and go everyday in all kinds of weather. It’s for someone who needs a practical vehicle with lots of useable space “About.com

“Better than we’re used to” describes the Equinox overall, particularly considering the source from which it has sprung. It’s not just a Vue with more room; it’s a wholesale improvement.Automobile Magazine

“We can think of a few other “E” words for the vehicle, as in easy to handle, excellent details designed into it, ecstasy for knowing it will serve our needs in comfort and style. For all that, we’ll give the Equinox a solid “A” for anticipation that owning it will be a joy.”Road and Travel
