2008 Chevrolet Aveo5 Review

2008 Chevrolet Aveo5 Review The Aveo is a compact car that debuted for 2004. The hatchback variant was renamed the Aveo5 with the debut of the second generation in 2007. However, the Aveo5 is still based on the original Aveo. Built on the same platform as the Korean Daewoo Kalos, the Aveo is one of the most affordable vehicles on the market.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

Being just about the cheapest vehicle on the road, we didn’t expect much out of the Chevrolet Aveo5. While it indeed doesn’t offer much in the way of amenities or comfort, it is a reliable econobox with a relatively roomy interior. While there’s certainly better out there, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything cheaper.

What’s New For 2008:

Tire pressure monitoring is now standard. The Aveo SV is the base model, having only the bare necessities. The LS adds air conditioning, power windows, and a CD player, among other features.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power information is not available. Problems with the Aveo include engine misfires, oil leaks, axle noise and inaccurate fuel gauges. It was recalled in 2004 for twisting seat belts. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

In government crash tests, the Aveo5 earned 5 stars in frontal tests and 4 stars in side tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Acceptable” for the front, “Marginal” for the side, and “Poor” for the rear. Side airbags come standard, anti-lock brakes are optional on the LS.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Inexpensive
+ Reliable
+ Better crash test scores than the sedan

Cons
– Limited safety options
– Cheap feeling interior
– Older design than sedan

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Nissan Versa 1.8 S includes a CD player, air conditioner and over twice the cargo capacity, but costs almost $3,000 more. The Toyota Matrix adds air conditioning, 23 more hp, a CD player and over three times the cargo capacity, but lacks side airbags and costs over $5,000 more. The Scion xD includes ABS, a CD player, AC, power accessories, 25 more hp and much more cargo space, but costs about $4,500 more.

What Others Are Saying:

“The interior is lousy with cheap. The instruments and warning lights occupy two humps on a dashboard that fell off a minivan assembly line. The center AC vents perch on the leading edge of the dashboard like an overnight tree fungus. Hollow-sounding doors, fake carbon fiber trim, carpeting with pile shorter than the hair on a Chihuahua’s ears and a headliner made of the same felt found on $100 pool tables complete the ambiance. No matter which of the senses you engage, you know you’re in the bargain basement’s basement.”The Truth About Cars

“Built by Daewoo in Korea, the Aveo5 rolls into 2008 basically unchanged. It’s devoid of any hint of excitement but is competent, roomy by subcompact standards, and well equipped.”Car and Driver

“A rubber-isolated front cross member takes the edge off potholes and expansion joints. Steering response is quick and friction-free; the dampers don’t play dead when a frisky driver is at the wheel. Still, the Aveo won’t be confused with a Mini Cooper. Its shift lever is long enough for school-bus duty, and its throttle hangs open during every gearchange.”Automobile Magazine
