2007 BMW Z4 Review

2007 BMW Z4 Review The Z4 is a sports car first launched by BMW in 2003. It replaced the previous Z3 by being even larger and faster. In 2006, the M variants were introduced: The Z4 Roadster and the Z4 Coupe, each featuring a 330-hp engine with a six-speed manual transmission.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

If you’re a BMW fan, then the BMW Z4 will not disappoint. It holds tight, even when all 330 horses are being pushed out. However, the BMW quality will cost you quite a bit more than the competition and BMW has been somewhat stingy with extra features. The Infiniti G35, while not nearly as stylish, presents an overall better value.

What’s New For 2007:

A tire-pressure monitor and auxiliary audio jack are now standard. The Premium Package now adds a four-year subscription to BMW Assist. The optional leather is now available in Saddle Brown.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power only gives the Z4 2.5 stars for overall mechanical quality and 2 stars for overall design quality. Problems that affected the early Z4 include bad oil sensors, engine knock, and oil leaks. It was recalled once in 2003 for airbag deployment failure and the 2003-04 Z4 was recalled due to vapor lock. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

In government crash tests, the Z4 earned 4 stars in frontal tests and 3 stars in front seat side tests. IIHS ratings are not available. Anti-lock brakes, run-flat tires, tire-pressure monitoring, side airbags, active knee protectors, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Sharp handling
+ Solid reliability
+ Elegant design

Cons
– Mediocre crash test scores
– Poor value
– Missing some expected luxury features

Head-To-Head Competition:

The 2008 Audi TT includes an automatic and leather seats standard, but only has a four cylinder engine and lacks side airbags. The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Touring convertible costs over $8,000 less and adds a DVD player, CD changer, and an automatic. It has 26 less hp than the Z4 and lacks traction control. The Infiniti G35 offers the best value of the bunch, costing $3,000 less, with a CD changer, leather seats, 60 more hp, and a standard automatic. The Z4, however, gets up to five more miles to the gallon.

What Others Are Saying:

“The Z4 is a wonderful driver. The 3.0i is as stable as the Swiss franc and without cowl shake, even on seriously pockmarked pavement. At low speeds, the ride can be a bit jiggly with the sport suspension and eighteen-inch wheels and tires, but the trade-off is majestic composure in turns.”Automobile Magazine

“Despite my minor gripes, the Z4 M Coupe remains a hugely engaging and charismatic car as well as being incredibly exploitable and faithful, too…It’s a car you simply get or you don’t get and for those that do, there’s no better small sports coupe.”The Car Connection

“Few companies get to corner an entire segment of the market. Leave it to BMW to do it twice in a decade.” – Forbes
